Chapter 20

The following morning Aria sat in the breakfast room with a handful of other customers, enjoying Nicole's mother's excellent cooking. Right when Aria filled her mouth with a massive bite of biscuits and sausage gravy, Nicole bounded up to her and kissed her on the cheek before taking a seat. Aria almost choked on her food, and she reached for her glass of water to wash the mouthful down. When she swallowed, she stared at Nicole, short of breath. Her cheek tingled and she resisted the urge to place her hand over it.

“What was that for?”

Nicole beamed at her. “Just being you.”

Aria locked eyes with Nicole, and her fingers ached with the need to wrap around the back of Nicole's neck and pull her close so she could kiss her hard. Aria wondered if Nicole had caught on to any of her discreet glances or her lapses in concentration. Then she mentally sighed. Nicole had no feelings for her. In her mind, she had just gotten her old best friend back. Nothing more.

“Well, thanks, I guess.”

“You're welcome.”

“Why are you so happy, anyway? Did you and Jenna have that great a time?”

Nicole leaned back in her chair and turned her face upwards as she smiled. “We had the best time.”

“What happened?”

“Not much. We ate and we drank, but more importantly, we had some enlightening conversation. I'm very excited about new developments that are on the horizon.”

“Are we talking personal or professional.”

Nicole sat up and stared at Aria, her eyes sparkling. “Personal.”

Aria's heart skipped a beat. Was Nicole insinuating something? It was highly unlikely, so she let it go.

“Good for you then.”

“How are things going with your singing lessons?”

Aria tilted her head. “Good, for the most part.”

“So, you'd totally be up for a girls’ night tonight, right?”

“I am.”

Nicole clapped her hands, then shoved away from the table. “Great. I'll come get you once I'm done with work.”

Nicole stood behind Aria and leaned down to hug her before she took off. Aria watched the way her hips swayed and shook her head. Nicole was going to be the end of her. Just when she had started getting used to being around her, just as friends, Nicole went ahead and upped their level of physical affection. Aria loved the closeness and the touches, but the fact that she couldn't be with Nicole, and had no one else to provide release, had her taking more cold showers and more long walks than she usually would.

Aria put her head in her hands. Why had she agreed to dinner? Now she would spend the rest of the day dreaming about it, reading into all the little touches she had shared with Nicole thus far, and what they might have meant now that she knew Nicole was bi.

Aria shoved away from the table and walked up to her room. She grabbed her car keys and her wallet then walked into the parking lot. Half an hour later, she stood at Mrs. Ansell's doorstep.

Mrs. Ansell answered the door with her brows furrowed.
